Vestibular processing can be thought of as the "balance system" of the body. Just like a tightrope walker relies on their balance to keep them from falling off the rope, our vestibular system helps us maintain balance and stay upright. It's like having a little internal gyroscope that keeps us steady and on track. 

 

Sensory processing, on the other hand, is like the "sensory mailroom" of the body. Just as a mailroom sorts and organizes incoming mail, our sensory system processes incoming information from the environment and helps us make sense of it. It's like having a team of workers in our brain who categorize and label sensory information so we can understand what we're experiencing. 

 

Trauma can affect both the vestibular and sensory processing systems in different ways. Trauma can cause the vestibular system to become hypersensitive, leading to feelings of dizziness, vertigo, or motion sickness. It can also cause the sensory system to become overloaded, leading to sensory processing difficulties such as hypersensitivity to touch, sound, or light. 

 

Somatic experiencing is a therapeutic approach that can help individuals who have experienced trauma to release and heal these physical sensations held in the body. By helping individuals to tune into their bodily sensations and move through them in a safe and supported way, somatic experiencing can help to regulate the nervous system and promote healing (Levine, 2010). 

 

The Safe and Sound Protocol is another therapeutic approach that can help individuals who have experienced trauma to regulate their nervous system. This protocol involves listening to specially filtered music designed to stimulate the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in regulating the body's stress response. By stimulating the vagus nerve, the Safe and Sound Protocol can help to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety (Porges, 2017). 

 

So, to sum up, the vestibular system is like a tightrope walker's balance, the sensory system is like a sensory mailroom, trauma can affect both systems in different ways, somatic experiencing can help regulate the nervous system, and the Safe and Sound Protocol can help promote relaxation and reduce anxiety.
