Childhood hitting can have a significant impact on the amygdala, particularly when it occurs during early childhood. Studies have shown that children who experience physical abuse during early childhood may have a smaller amygdala volume compared to children who do not experience physical abuse (Teicher et al., 2003).

This may be due to the fact that the amygdala is particularly sensitive during early childhood development, and exposure to chronic stress and trauma can disrupt normal brain development. Childhood hitting can also lead to an overactive amygdala, which can cause feelings of fear, anxiety, and hyper-vigilance (Pechtel & Pizzagalli, 2011).

Somatic therapy can be an effective way to help individuals who have experienced childhood hitting to better regulate their emotions and sensations. By helping individuals become more aware of their feelings and sensations and learn how to feel safe, somatic therapy can help the amygdala become less sensitive and let individuals feel more in control (Perry, 2006).
