The hippocampus is a special part of our brain that helps us remember things. It's like a little camera in our head that takes pictures of all the fun things we do, the people we meet, and the places we go. Then, when we want to remember something, the hippocampus helps us find that picture and bring the memory back to our mind!
The hippocampus is also like a little library in our brain where we store our memories. But when we experience trauma, it's like a big storm comes and shakes up the library. The books fall off the shelves and get mixed up, making it hard to find the memories we want to remember. Over time, our brain can learn to put the books back on the shelves and organize them again, but it takes time and patience.
Somatic Experiencing is a type of therapy that can help us reorganize the library in our brain by working with our body's natural ability to regulate stress. When we experience trauma, our body's stress response can get stuck in a state of high activation, which can affect the functioning of our hippocampus and other parts of the brain.
Somatic Experiencing can help us become more aware of these bodily sensations and learn to release them in a safe and gradual way, like gently putting the books back on the shelves.
By releasing these stuck patterns of activation, we can reduce the impact of trauma on our hippocampus and other parts of the brain, and restore our ability to remember and process information, like finding the right book on the shelf when we need it.
